Discovering New Horizons: How Travel and Art Shaped My Passion for Exploring the World

Christopher Miyakawa

There’s something uniquely exhilarating about stepping into the unknown. Whether it’s the promise of distant lands or the blank canvas waiting for a burst of creativity, the thrill of geographical and artistic exploration has always held a special place in my heart. Over the years, I’ve realised that my love for travel and artwork are not just separate passions but two sides of the same coin. Each journey I undertake, both physical and creative, brings new perspectives, challenges, and inspirations that enrich my understanding of the world and myself.

The Spark of Wanderlust

My love for travel didn’t begin with grand adventures or exotic destinations but rather with an innate curiosity about the world. As a child, I was always fascinated by maps. I would spend hours flipping through atlases, tracing the contours of countries I had yet to see, imagining the cultures, landscapes, and stories waiting to be discovered. This curiosity only grew stronger as I got older, and eventually, travel became not just a desire but a calling.

I remember my first international trip vividly. The cobblestone streets of Florence, the ancient ruins of Rome, and the serene beauty of the Amalfi Coast were all far more breathtaking in person than I had ever imagined. But beyond the iconic landmarks and stunning landscapes, the interactions with people, the immersion in different cultures, and the exposure to new ways of life truly captivated me. In the heart of Italy, it was here that I first understood how travel could be transformative—not just for the places you visit but for the person you become along the way.

The Connection Between Travel and Art

In Paris, I found myself inspired by the play of light on the Seine River at dusk. In Morocco, the vibrant hues of spices piled high in the medina overwhelmed my senses, each shade offering a new challenge to translate onto the canvas. In Japan, the delicate simplicity of a zen garden spoke to me in a way that no photograph could, and I spent hours sketching the lines of the rocks, the gentle curves of the moss, and the ripples in the koi pond.

In these moments, art became more than just a creative outlet; it was a way to engage with the world more profoundly and intimately. My paintbrush or pencil extended my perception, allowing me to communicate my sense of wonder and discovery with others. Each brushstroke and sketch was a way to immortalize my feelings in those places, to give them form and texture so they could live on tangibly.

The Role of Art in Understanding Different Cultures

Travelling to different parts of the world has also deepened my appreciation for the diversity of artistic expression. Every culture has its unique way of interpreting beauty, and each artistic tradition offers a window into that culture’s values, history, and worldview. I’ve learned so much by observing the art surrounding me on my travels—from the intricate patterns of Persian carpets to the striking simplicity of Scandinavian design.

In India, I was mesmerized by the vibrant, detailed scenes in the murals of ancient temples. Each brushstroke told a story—of gods and goddesses, myth and legend, daily life, and spirituality. I also had the opportunity to take part in a traditional painting workshop in Udaipur, where a local artist taught me the delicate art of miniature painting. It was a humbling experience, as I learned not just the techniques but also the deep spiritual significance behind every stroke of the brush.

Similarly, in South America, I had the chance to visit the studios of indigenous artists who kept traditional art forms alive while simultaneously blending them with modern influences. The colours, textures, and techniques they used reflected their cultural heritage, and seeing their work firsthand gave me a new appreciation for the richness of Indigenous artistry. It was a reminder that art is a universal language that transcends borders, a means of communication that unites people despite their differences.

Personal Growth Through Exploration

As much as I’ve gained artistically from my travels, my personal growth has been most profound. Travelling forces you to step outside your comfort zone, embrace uncertainty, and confront challenges that might not have been on your radar before. Whether navigating the narrow streets of a bustling foreign city or figuring out how to communicate when you don’t speak the language, travel is a constant reminder that there’s always more to learn and experience than you initially expect.

I’ve had moments of doubt and frustration, as we all do when we step into the unknown. But it’s in those moments that growth happens. I’ve learned to be more adaptable, patient, and open to new experiences. I’ve also discovered that art, like travel, is a journey—not always linear or predictable, but always rewarding. There are days when the creative process feels stalled, the paint doesn’t seem to flow, or the canvas feels impossibly blank. But as with travel, persistence and trust in the process eventually lead to breakthroughs, to moments of clarity and inspiration that make it all worthwhile.

Combining My Passions

Over the years, I’ve found that travel and art are complementary interests and integral parts of my life. I’ve started to bring my artwork with me on my travels, sketching or painting in the places that inspire me. This has allowed me to create deeply personal work connected to the places I’ve visited. There’s something magical about painting in the very landscape that inspires you or sketching the streets of a foreign city while you’re still experiencing the sensory overload of the moment.

Moreover, I’ve begun to share these works through exhibitions and online platforms, where I’ve had the chance to connect with other like-minded individuals—travellers, artists, and creatives—who share the same passion for exploring and capturing the world in art. I’ve learned that sharing your journey through words and visuals can be a powerful way to inspire others to embark on their explorations, whether in their backyards or on distant continents.

The Future of My Passion

I’m excited about the future as I continue to travel and create. The world is vast, and countless places, people, and experiences are waiting to be discovered. I want to keep pushing the boundaries of my artwork, experimenting with new mediums, and exploring new landscapes. I also hope to continue inspiring others to find their creative outlets and explore the world around them. Whether through painting, photography, writing, or any other form of expression, I believe that the more we immerse ourselves in the beauty and diversity of the world, the more we can grow—both as artists and as human beings.

Travel and art have shaped my life in ways I never could have anticipated. My journey, whether through physical landscapes or creative endeavours, brings new challenges, insights, and joys. As I explore the world and express myself through art, I realize that my passions are not just about seeing new places or creating beautiful works—they are about discovering new horizons, both in the world around me and within myself. The more I explore, the more I learn, and the more I realize that the journey, in both travel and art, is never truly over. There’s always something new to discover, something new to create, and a new horizon waiting to be reached.
